BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH LITERACY

Literacy refers to our ability to understand and learn from what we read; think critically about what has been written and clearly communicate ideas through the written word. Literacy is the backbone of all of our learning, and helps us to participate fully in our communities, the workforce and the larger society. September is National Literacy Month, and is a great time to get a better grasp of the issues nationally and locally, and to identify ways we can get involved to move our families and community forward. An examination of national literacy statistics reveals a very sobering reality.

Even before he took office in May, 2011, Mayor Emanuel was working on what would become the cornerstone of his first 90 days in office— working with education advocacy groups to pass SB-7, a reform bill that would permanently change the landscape of education in the City of Chicago. The bill, which was sponsored by Senator Kimberly Lightford, was signed into law in June 2011 by Governor Quinn as the 2011 Education Reform Act. The Act amended the Illinois School Code as well as the Illinois Labor Relations Act. SB-7 sailed through both chambers of the Legislature, with a unanimous vote in the Senate (59-0), and winning by a margin of 112-1 in the House of Representatives. Representative Monique Davis, a former educator in Chicago Public Schools, was the only legislator to vote against the bill, as she did not want to support any “union busting” legislation.

ELECTED SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

I thank Cliff Kelley for having me as one of his guests last week to speak from the community’s perspective on the potential for an elected school board in Chicago. I represented the Lawndale Alliance. Other guests for that segment included Rikki Jones, the Chairman of the Cook County Democratic Women, and Crystal Williams. Crystal is a parent of a student who attended Price Elementary School in the Austin area. We had a very good discussion. Rikki was very concerned that we need to do more than have an advisory referendum on the ballot, as the laws regarding the structure of the CPS board are changed in Springfield.

Urban Art Retreat’s Back to School Event

Annual back to school event provided by Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center at 1957 S. Spaulding Ave. took place on August 25 from noon-4p.m. We began with a children’s parade of costumes and noisemakers to wake people up to see their stage performances and be a part of the audience. Each year, kids perform on our stage showing a variety of talents and always want adults in the neighborhood to applaud! This talent show is open to all children who want to show off their talents- dance, sing, read poetry, fashion show, and more. For instance one small child danced over & over, and another boy read from a book of poems by Maya Angelou. The youth program at CUARC this year featured children learning about domestic violence and writing poems about how kids feel about domestic violence in their homes. (see the website to read children’s stories about violence they have seen and/or experienced. (www.urbanartretreat.com).
